Last Wednesday marked the final critique for the Advanced Chair Studio. Taught by Seth Stem this fall, the studio was taken by juniors, seniors, and fifth-year students as one of several advanced studios offered by the department as part of the Industrial Design curriculum. As part of the deliverable for the course, student were asked to construct two chairs. The first round of chairs were completed early in November, many in time for the RISD ID Triennial Show. For the first chair, students enrolled in the course were simply asked by Stem to create a chair, taking into consideration its use and method of construction. The second chair, however, was asked that it be upholstered in some manner, with this upholstery being integrated into the design of the chair. Students approached this dilemma in a variety of methods, from Nash Palazzo (BFA ID ’12) choosing to construct his chair from poplar with leather upholstery to Alex Savard (BFA ID ’12) meticulously threading bungee cords throughout the frame of his chair. Below are images from this day-long final critique as taken by Savard.
