RISD 2nd Life | Sharing Ideas through Materials

Second Life, an art and supply recycling resource, has become an integral part of the RISD and local Providence community since their genesis back in 2008. The organization, now under the new leadership of Industrial Design students Joseph Escobar ’13, Soaib Grewal ’11, and Jerome Arul ’12, has been doing a significant amount of planning this year with hopes of expansion. One of their newest initiatives includes launching the project “Sharing Ideas through Materials,” which aims to raise funds to purchase two electric cargo bikes to help them better transport these materials they collect each week around the community. Their rewards for pledges to their project include enticing promises of high fives to a cast-iron masterpiece created by Grewal [below].

The project is being launched via Kickstarter, a website aimed at helping crowds fund projects started by individuals. Charles Adler, Co-Founder of Kickstarter, was recently on campus here at RISD this past week and helped to influence the students to utilize the digital medium as a way of crowd-sourcing funds. With the recent launch of their curated pages, Kickstarter has made it easier than ever to find and access projects launched at certain schools and with various affiliations, as it provides a new system of organizing and grouping projects. This includes the addition of a RISD Curated page, where you can find  the project launched by RISD Second Life.
