For the first Design Principles assignment of Spring semester, sophomores were asked to create a paper lamp using ninety pound card stock from the RISD Store. After a quick demo from Origami expert, Corey Comenitz, on wet folding and other folding techniques, students set to work experimenting and exploring the possibilities of the material as a way to diffuse light. Looking at various aspects of lamp design such as the consumer, mood, appeal, and setting where the lamp would take place, students drew up mood and image boards depicting scenarios where their lamp would be used.
