Here are the six elements of a success portfolio presented during the recent recent ISDA Rhode Island portfolio preparation session at RISD.
1. Story-Telling
- Walk your audience through your process (albeit, quickly)
- Make a “bulletproof” case study (prove you have designed the right solution for the target user)
- Don’t be afraid to show your thinking / interests
2. Consistency
- Page formatting makes a difference
- Each page should be part of a system, with the unique ability to live alone
- Work to get all of your projects to a similar level of quality (note: this does NOT mean level of finish)
3. Information Hierarchy / Messaging
- “Metals 2” means nothing outside of RISD
- Don’t allow eyes to wander aimlessly – DIRECT your audience
- Make your point fast, and make it clear
4. Visuals
- Better photographs make better portfolios
- Visually record your development
- Context is key
5. Balance
- Show your flexibility as a designer, while highlighting your passion
- Order your projects strategically
- Sketches, models, renderings, research, etc. are all equally important to a potential employer
6. YOU
- Dress appropriately
- Smile
- Leave-behinds are welcome (resumes and business cards)
- Show your personality
- Be respectful
- Be yourself – you’re interviewing them as much as they’re interviewing you
