Next week, Rhode Island School of Design will be hosting a symposium on art, design, and the future of healthcare titled Make It Better. The event, spanning March 11th and 12th, is sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Pioneer Portfolio and will bring accomplished artists, designer, and activists together with health care professionals, policy-makers, entrepreneurs, as well as members of the RISD community to spark conversations and connections in  the realm of art and design alongside health innovation and change.

Keynote Speakers include Mel Chin, Sara Diamond, Donna Garland, Raynard S. Kington, and Howard K. Koh. Other speakers include RISD Industrial Design Department’s own associate professor, Khipra Nichols, as well as an alumnus from the department, Aidan Petrie, and even a senior of Industrial Design here at RISD, Soaib Grewal.

Further representation of the department can be seen in the Video Gallery located on the site, where two out of the three students interviewed for their interaction with healthcare and design are current students of the Industrial Design Department. Gunther Chanange, a graduate in the department, discusses his involvement in an internship that focused on the early detection of skin cancer where he revolutionized the mindset of scientists and researchers who couldn’t imagine how designers would ever influence their field. Soaib Grewal, a senior in the undergraduate program, speaks to his work with WaterWalla, an initiative to develop product-based and systems-based solutions for transporting clean water to the slums of India.
