This Thursday, November 3rd, marks the first talk of the RISD Industrial Design Department Lecture Series. The lecture will be held on the 6th floor of 161 South Main Street at 12:00-1:00pm.

The ID department will be holding a lecture series this year that will focus on the growth of tools for small and medium scale manufacturing.
Historically, industrial design students have had two options when it comes to employment, produce one-off works, or work for large companies with the capital necessary for the tooling and machinery necessary to produce mass-marketed products.
New technologies and services are just starting to open up a new and exciting third option. Using services like Kickstarter for funding, and Protolabs for production, it is now possible for young designers to start their own businesses with little more than a good idea and the ambition to make it happen.
We have gathered a few examples of people doing this kind of work, and welcome your input on anyone else who you would like to hear from as part of this series.
Best,
Dave
